All about STEM!

STEMscience, technology, engineering & mathematics

Our STEM curriculum integrates real-life applications of science, technology, engineering, and math through experiential hands-on learning. Students develop 21st-century skills such as problem solving, collaboration, and communication, in this interdisciplinary and applied approach to education

STEM integrates all all core disciplines (reading, writing, social studies, religion, science, technology, engineering & math) into a cohesive learning paradigm which will spark curiosity and prepare students for future career paths in not only math and science but all other fields of study.

Engineering Design Process

The engineering design process frames our work around STEM.  This is one of the best parts about STEM because it highlights that none of our work is ever complete, rather, we are in the ongoing work of growth.  This image is created by PLTW.org.

Collaborative Learning

Empowering students in STEM is our goal, that is, ensuring that every student has the skills and dispositions necessary to pursue STEM programs in college and in career.  Collaborative learning is a research based instructional strategy as well as an important skill for students to possess in order to be successful as adults.  Pope St. John XXIII uses the University of Washington 5D Framework as its instructional framework.  This framework is research based and it supports the  importance of student voice, student engagement, and collaborative learning.

STEM Lab, Maker Space, & the World

PSJXXIII students are blessed to have a STEM lab and a Maker Space including a 3-D printer, laptop computers, STEM models and design materials, and furniture designed to support collaborative learning.  In addition to that, we want to grow as a STEM school, continuing to expand the walls of the classroom to see students engaging in nature and in the community to experience authentic learning in a dynamic environment.

Community Partnerships

PSJXXIII’s partnership with the Seattle Children’s Hospital highlights the opportunity we have as a STEM school to connect with the community and to expand student engagement in STEM.   We look forward to parent engagement and to continuing to strengthen our community partnerships in STEM.
